West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
SOUTH BEND, IN - For the first time in the 2018 season, the West Michigan Whitecaps won a game they were trailing heading into the ninth inning in a 3-2 victory over the South Bend Cubs Wednesday night at Four Winds Field.
The victory gives the Whitecaps a 5-2 road trip to begin the second half of the year, with their only losses coming in a doubleheader at Fort Wayne last Sunday. It marks the first road swing the Whitecaps have posted a winning record since going 4-3 on a trip to Great Lakes and Lake County from April 20-26.
Roberto Caro tripled to lead off the first inning and scored on Christian Donahue's groundout to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead. The score remained the same until the ninth when Brock Deatherage tripled to lead off the frame and scored when South Bend center fielder Chris Singleton dropped a pop up from Colby Bortles. Jordan Pearce followed with a ground ball which third baseman Delvin Zinn threw wildly to second base to put runners on the corners with none out. After Anthony Pereira and Garrett McCain struck out, Dylan Rosa walked, and pinch-hitter Jose Azocar lined a two-run single into right field to give the "Caps the go-ahead runs and a 3-1 advantage. The Cubs made things tenuous in the ninth when Michael Cruz doubled on a ball Deatherage lost in the dark evening sky. Rosa nearly suffered the same fate before relocating the ball and making a diving catch in the frame. South Bend plated a run on the play, but the "Caps ultimately escaped with a 3-2 win.
On the mound, Dane Myers tossed a career-high seven innings of one-run baseball while allowing just one run on five hits while striking out four in a no-decision. Clate Schmidt (5-1) threw the final two innings to earn his fifth victory, while Brian Glowicki (1-4) blew his first save of the year and took his fourth loss in the process. The Whitecaps were 0-24 in games in which they were trailing after eight innings until Wednesday's win.
