Burlington Bees News Release
Clinton, IA. - The Burlington Bees (31-44) came up short in game two against the Clinton LumberKings (43-33), losing 5-4. Steven Moyers (2-0) earned his second win for the LumberKings in his ninth game overall despite allowing Burlington to get back into the game. Moyers went two innings, allowed three runs on four hits, and struck out three. Jose Soriano (0-2) had a quick outing in route to his second loss. Soriano went just a third of an inning, allowed three runs on one hit, and walked one.
Bees strike first, but Clinton responds
Franklin Torres extended the top of the first with a two out single and Kevin Williams Jr drove him in on a double to left to give Burlington a 1-0 lead. However, Clinton quickly responded with a big inning in the bottom half of the inning.
Ariel Sandoval got on with a one out single and Ryan Costello drew a walk to get runners on first and second. Onil Pena was then hit by a pitch and the day was done for Soriano after that. Max Herrmann then entered the game, but Clinton had no problems with him either. Keegan McGovern hit a sacrifice fly to center, tying the game at 1-1. After a walk from Johnny Adams, Dimas Ojeda singled to center to drive in Costello and Pena to give Clinton a 3-1 lead.
Adams and Sandoval add two in the fourth
Johnny Adams quickly added a run on the board in the fourth for Clinton with his fifth homerun of the season to give Clinton a 4-1 lead. Ojeda then singled to right and scored later in the inning. Ojeda was attempting to steal third and a missed catch by Zane Gurwitz allowed Ojeda to score and give Clinton a 5-1 lead.
Bees make it interesting with big sixth
Williams Jr started the Bees sixth off with a one out single for his second hit of the game and Spencer Griffin followed him up with a single of his own to put runners on first and second. Zane Gurwitz then gave Burlington two runs on his fourth double of the season to make the score 5-3.
After a mound visit from Clinton, Harrison Wenson sent a doubled to left to score Gurwitz and Burlington was back in the game only trailing 5-4. However, Burlington would only get two more hits in the final three innings, and Clinton took game two 5-4.
Perez and Tavarez keep LumberKings off the board
Once again, the Bees got some solid innings out of their bullpen pitchers Mayky Perez and Jorge Tavarez. Perez pitched two innings, did not allow a baserunner and struck out four. Tavarez also went four innings, allowed just a walk and struck out four too.
However, Clinton's bullpen pitchers Scott Boches and Collin Kober didn't allow Burlington to ever have much of an opportunity to tie or take the lead after their big sixth inning. Boches earned his third hold of the season, throwing an inning of work, and striking out one hitter. Kober earned his fourth save, pitching the final two innings, allowing two hits and striking out four.
Some good and bad on offence
Burlington had a pretty solid day on offense, scoring four runs on eight hits, hitting three doubles, and going 2-8 with runners in scoring position. However, Burlington had 15 total strikeouts, which really hurt a lot of their scoring opportunities throughout the game. Kevin Williams Jr did extend his hit streak to 19 games now after a 2-3 game at the plate with a walk and an RBI. Williams Jr also has finished six of the 19 games in his hit streak with two hits in a game.
Looking Ahead
Bees will finish off their series against Clinton tomorrow and both teams will look to take the series with a win tomorrow. Burlington has not named their starter for tomorrow's game, but Clinton is expected to start Clay Chandler. Chandler is 3-1 with a 3.48 ERA is seven starts this season. This will be the final game of the road stand for the Bees, as they will be back at home on Thursday to start their series against Cedar Rapids.
