West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
PEORIA, IL - The West Michigan Whitecaps got in an early hole and could not recover as part of an 8-1 loss to the Peoria Chiefs on Saturday night in front of 2,746 fans at Dozer Park.
The Whitecaps had scored in the first inning during each of the first four games of this six-game series, but on Saturday, it was Peoria who had taken the lead in the opening frame. The Whitecaps loss puts the Chiefs in a position to split this six-game series with a win on Sunday night.
The Chiefs carried their momentum built by scoring seven runs in the sixth inning of Friday night's contest into Saturday. Peoria collected the game's first runs with a three-run homer by Chandler Redmond - his fifth this season - to take a 3-0 lead. The Whitecaps scored a run in the third on back-to-back doubles by Bryant Packard and Parker Meadows to trim the deficit to 3-1, but the Chiefs took back that run with a single by Francisco Hernandez to move the score to 4-1. Peoria's offense exploded for the second straight night in the sixth as Zade Richardson blasted a three-run homer of his own. Later in the frame, Christhian Longa followed suit with a solo shot off West Michigan reliever Zach Shephard, who has given up 11 runs in his last three appearances.
Chiefs starter Nick Trogrlic-Iverson pitched 6.2 outstanding innings of one-run baseball while allowing just two hits and striking out five. The Whitecaps fall to 25-26 on the season as Peoria improves to 21-32. Packard, Meadows, and Trei Cruz each reached base twice in a losing cause.
