 West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps pitching staff was plagued by the big inning in a 9-4 loss to the Lake County Captains on Sunday afternoon at LMCU Ballpark.
Whitecaps pitchers allowed a combined eight runs in the second and fourth innings as the Captains finished 5-for-10 with runners in scoring position. Meanwhile, all-but-two 'Caps batters tallied a hit in the ballgame - but failed to build on that - finishing just 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position in the defeat.
West Michigan plated two runs out of the gate as a wild pitch scored Austin Murr from third base before Roberto Campos added an RBI, jumping in front 2-0 in the first inning. Whitecaps starting pitcher Garrett Burhenn was removed from the game after just 1.2 innings pitched as Lake County responded with three runs in the top of the second - spotlighted by a two-run single from Tyresse Turner - jumping in front 3-2. Lake County continued their offensive onslaught with a five-run frame in the fourth - highlighted by a two-run double from CJ Kayfus - as their lead ballooned to 8-2. Lake County added one more insurance tally in the following inning as Turner scorched an RBI single into centerfield before West Michigan trimmed the lead with a pair of RBI in the sixth from Peyton Graham and Dom Johnson, 9-4. However, West Michigan couldn't stage a late comeback, as eight of the last nine Caps hitters were retired by Captains relievers Zane Morehouse and Allan Hernandez - who combined for two scoreless innings to close out the resounding 9-4 victory.
The Captains improve to 11-9, while the Whitecaps fall to 8-13. Captains reliever Adam Tulloch (1-0) picks up his first win of the year, allowing two runs through three innings with a punchout, as Burhenn (0-2) suffers his second loss, giving up three runs through 1.2 innings of work. Due to pitch counts and limited innings, Whitecaps starting pitchers have yet to collect a win through the first 21 games of the season, while the relievers overall record falls to an even 8-8.
