Caps End Season Series with Fighting Saints Tonight at Coliseum
December 29, 2015 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Madison Capitols News Release
Madison, WI - The Madison Capitols (10-13-1-2) will look to win their third consecutive game on Tuesday as they welcome the Dubuque Fighting Saints (18-8-0-0) into the Alliant Energy Center for a 7 p.m. puck drop.
The season series between the "Border Battle" rivals has gone the way of Dubuque through each of the first five encounters, including three one-goal victories. The Capitols could not make a late 2-0 lead hold up on Dec. 10, falling 3-2 in overtime. That gut-wrenching defeat succeeded a 6-5 barnburner on opening night at the Mystique Community Ice Center on Sept. 26.
Despite putting up 14 goals against the Saints in five games, the Capitols have not been able to crack the win column against Hunter Miska, the Dubuque goaltender who leads the USHL with 16 victories.
However, the Capitols enter the first game of the post-holiday break coming off of a pair of resounding victories against Lincoln and Green Bay on Dec. 18-19. Alex Payusov provided the highlight reel play of the year, dishing a perfect spin-a-rama backhand feed to Sam McCormick for the game winning goal in the Capitols' home victory against the Stars.
McCormick followed up his three-point performance on Dec. 18 with a two-goal, three-point night on Dec. 19 in his hometown of Green Bay, where the Capitols knocked off the Gamblers 4-3 in overtime. For the first time in his USHL career, McCormick (De Pere, Wis.) was awarded the CCM/USHL Forward of the Week honor for the week ending Dec. 19.
Madison's power play awoke from a lengthy slumber to strike three times in their last game in Green Bay on Dec. 19. All three of the Capitols' regulation time goals came with the man advantage before Tommy Muck launched the game winner in overtime on a seeing-eye wrist shot.
The Capitols will look to make it three wins in a row for the first time since they went on a franchise record five-game win streak from Oct. 9-23.
The Capitols follow up the Tuesday prime time matchup with a New Year's Eve showdown in Green Bay against the Gamblers on Thursday at 6:05 p.m. before traveling to Bloomington to take on the Thunder at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.
All Capitols games can be heard on the flagship home of Capitols hockey, 106.7 FM, 1670 AM, The Zone, online at www.madcitysportszone.com, or on the TuneIn radio app.
The Capitols then return home to start a seven-game homestand on Jan. 8 against the Sioux City Musketeers for New Year's Resolution/Fitness night! Local gyms and health clubs will be on hand to help fans spring into the New Year on the right foot! Tickets for all Capitols home games are available by calling (608) 257-CAPS (2277) or by visiting www.MadCapsHockey.com.
