Vancouver Whitecaps FC News Release
VANCOUVER, BC - Vancouver Whitecaps FC (7W-8L-8D) fell 1-0 to Portland Timbers (10W-10L-3D) Friday night in the first Cascadia Cup derby at BC Place in 854 days.
In the 26th minute, the Timbers had a chance to open the scoring through Dairon Asprilla but the Colombian winger was denied on the doorstep by 'Caps goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau, who calmly nestled the ball into his hands to keep the scores level at 0-0.
Fast forward to the 38th minute, it was the 'Caps turn to have a go at goal.
Russell Teibert found some space down the wing and put a ball in for Ryan Gauld, with the Scottish playmaker forcing a save out of Timbers goalkeeper Steve Clark at the near post.
After a cagey first half, both sides would go into the break deadlocked at 0-0.
The Timbers would open the scoring in the 66th minute, as striker Felipe Mora fired a shot at goal which deflected into the back of the net off 'Caps defender Ranko Veselinovic.
The 'Caps would push on for the equalizer, as substitute Déiber Caicedo drilled a shot on goal in the 77th minute but the ball was cleared just off the line by Portland defender Claudio Bravo.
Caicedo would once again come close to finding the tying goal for the 'Caps eight minutes later, as the Colombian just fired his header wide of the far post.
Despite their efforts, the 'Caps weren't able to claw back the draw.
The Blue and White will now get set for a Western Conference clash away to Colorado Rapids on Sunday, September 19 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Denver, Colorado. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. PT. You can catch the match live on TSN and AM730, with the radio pre-game show starting at 5 p.m. PT.
