Caps Battle in High Scoring Contest, Fall 8-5
March 10, 2023 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Madison Capitols News Release
Madison returned home on Friday night to face off against the USNTDP U-18's. The night started on a somber note with the recognition of the life and legacy of Madison hockey icon Dan Schachte. Schachte served as an NHL official for thirty season overseeing over 2,000 games. That was followed by a moment of silence for Rylan Ezman, a Caps AAA player who passed away last weekend.
The Capitols looked had plenty of reasons to give that extra effort on Friday night, and it showed right away. The Caps first power play opportunity found twine with Matt McGroarty deflecting in his 12th goal of the season on a deflection from a Brandt shot. Less than two minutes later, the US tallied a goal of their own to even things at 1-1. One more US goal gave the National Team Development Program a 2-1 lead at intermission number one.
In the second, the majority of the period held quiet on the scoreboard. Madison picked up chance after chance but was unsuccessful in burying the puck. That is, until the Caps found their fourth power play opportunity of the night. Gunderson skated toward the net and riffled one toward the net. Once again, there to answer for the Caps was Matt McGroarty to bury the game tying goal. The two teams skated all even at two into intermission.
In the third, USNTDP opened the scoring with three unanswered. The Caps found a goal off of the stick of Andrew Kuzma who tallied his eighth of the season. The US found their way to eight goals on the night, but Madison answered with another two goals, one from Will Felicio and one from Ethan Elias.
The Caps fall 8-5 in game one of the two game set. Will Felicio and Matt McGroarty shined with four points and two goals respectively between the two. The two teams are back at it again tomorrow night with puck drop at 7:05 pm. Tickets still can be purchased at tickets.madcapshockey.com.
