USHL Waterloo Black Hawks

A Goal Per Period Worth a Win

March 10, 2023 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

The Waterloo Black Hawks tied the game in the first, took the lead in the second, and notched the winner in the third Friday during a 3-2 road victory against the Sioux Falls Stampede.

The result at Denny Sanford Premier Center evens up the season series between the teams at three wins apiece. Waterloo returns for one more game against the Stampede on April 7th.

Sioux Falls recorded the opening goal moments after a turnover in the Hawks' defensive zone. The puck ended up right on Chris Pelosi's stick between the circles for an unassisted goal at 4:29. Waterloo answered during the late seconds of a long special teams sequence. Back-to-back Sioux Falls minors overlapped slightly and Sam Rinzel capitalized at the end of the second power play. Aaron Pionk found Rinzel near the left dot, and he beat Xavier Medina with a quick shot at 9:11.

Waterloo could not convert a five-minute power play to start the second period, but did take the lead during the shift after it ended. At 5:24, Ben Robertson wired a shot under the crossbar from the right circle to nudge the Hawks on front.

Gavin Lindberg scored a vital insurance goal 32 seconds into the third period. The rebound of Patrick Geary's point shot was left loose with Medina down. Lindberg snagged it, pulling the puck to his backhand, and lifting it in.

Waterloo denied three Sioux Falls power plays - including almost a minute of five-on-three time - during the sequence that followed. However, the Stampede pulled back within one on a miscue, which allowed Jaksen Panzer to bat in a shorthanded goal at 13:29.

It was close the rest of the way, with the Hawks holding off the Stampede, including almost two minutes played six-on-five. Emmett Croteau made 26 saves.

Saturday the Black Hawks are at home to host the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders at Young Arena. It is the only time Waterloo plays on Commercial Street during a seven-game span. The Hawks will take the ice in Cedar Valley Origins jerseys presented by - and benefitting - Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity. Seats are still available for the game; to order, visit tickets.waterlooblackhawks.com.
