Capitols Look for More Cheese Cup Success in Green Bay

December 31, 2015 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Madison Capitols News Release

Green Bay, WI - The Madison Capitols (10-14-1-2) will look to clinch at least a split of the Wisconsin Cheese Cup season series as they visit the Green Bay Gamblers (17-9-1-1) at the Resch Center for a 6 p.m. New Year's Eve meeting.

Despite being without Adam Huska, the USHL's best statistical goaltender (league-high .942 save percentage & 1.65 goals-against average), the Gamblers have been faring just fine in his absence. While Huska has been representing Slovakia at the World Junior Championships, Kevin Reich, a former German World Junior participant, has won three of his past four starts, and Green Bay is 5-0-1 in its last six games.

However, that one blemish on the Gamblers' docket came at the hands of the Capitols, who are 3-2-0-0 in the season series against Green Bay this season. With a victory to close out 2015, the Capitols can clinch at least a share of the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board's Cheese Cup.

The Capitols will enter the Resch Center hoping to erase the memory of a 6-1 loss at the hands of Dubuque on Tuesday night at the Alliant Energy Center, a loss that finished off a Fighting Saints' sweep of the Capitols in the 2015-16 season.

Despite the offense's quiet nature, Alex Payusov continued his strong first half by potting his 11th goal of the season, drawing him into a tie with Sam McCormick for team leadership.

McCormick, the native of De Pere, has historically torched his hometown Gamblers. He leads all Capitols with six points in the five matchups with Green Bay this season, with two goals and four assists. He potted a goal and added two assists in the Capitols' 4-3 overtime win at the Resch Center 12 nights ago on Dec. 19.

Tommy Muck was the ultimate hero in the last meeting. On a night when the Capitols scored three times on the man advantage, it was Muck's even strength tally in the extra frame that catapulted Madison to the win, the first time in five meetings that the road team came out victorious.

Puck drop from Green Bay is set for 6 p.m. this evening, with coverage on 106.7 FM, 1670 AM, The Zone, online at www.madcitysportszone.com, or on the TuneIn radio app. The Capitols will leave Green Bay to kick off 2016 with a visit to the Bloomington Thunder on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum.

The Capitols return home to start a seven-game homestand on Jan. 8 against the Sioux City Musketeers for New Year's Resolution/Fitness night! Local gyms and health clubs will be on hand to help fans spring into the New Year on the right foot! Tickets for all Capitols home games are available by calling (608) 257-CAPS (2277) or by visiting www.MadCapsHockey.com.
