Brockton Rox News Release
Brockton, Mass. - Despite a solid start from Nick Tyson and two-hit evenings from five different Brockton players, the Quebec Capitales put together a comeback victory to salvage the third game of the series, 6-5, in a Can-Am League affair at Campanelli Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Both teams' bats were quiet until the fourth, when Quebec (26-17 second half, 56-34 overall) broke through with three runs. After RF Anthony Crossingled and C Pete LaForest walked, 3B Michael Thompson brought home both with a three-run home run, his sixth of the season.
Brockton (25-17, 52-37) came back with a pair of runs in the fifth; after CF Chris Valencia led off the inning with a single, DH Scott Wearne brought him home with a double to right. C Shawn Williams then followed up with a single of his own, driving in Wearne. The Rox took a 4-3 lead the following inning, courtesy of four consecutive singles to start the frame, by 3B Phillip Cuadrado, LF Mike Conroy, SS Dominic Ramos and 2B Derek Kinzler.
Quebec rallied to take the lead for good with three runs in the seventh off of new Rox reliever Jon Plefka, making his first appearance for Brockton. After 2B Alex Nunez and CF Goefrey Tomlinson hit back-to-back one-out singles, Cros drove in Nunez with an RBI single, moving Tomlinson to third. Plefka then balked home Tomlinson; two batters later, Laforest brought home Cros with a single.
In the seventh, Brockton made it a one-run game again when Brachold rapped a one-out double and later came home on Conroy's RBI single, making the score 6-5. The Rox threatened in the ninth, loading the bases on two walks and a hit batsman off of Capitales closer Andrew Albers, but the only Saskatchewan native in the Can-Am League was able to shut the door for his 17th save of the season.
Troy Cate (5-3) earned the victory for Quebec, allowing four runs on ten hits in six innings of work, fanning four. Tyson did not register a decision in his second start for the Rox, throwing six frames and giving up three runs on seven hits. Plefka (0-1) got the loss.
Valencia, Wearne, Williams, Conroy and Ramos all had two hits on the night for Brockton, as did Nunez, Thompson and Cros for Quebec.
The Rox are idle Thursday before starting their final series of the season on Friday evening, a four-game set against the Worcester Tornadoes. In the opener, league wins leader Mike Smith (12-3) takes the mound against Zach Zuercher (6-2) at 7:05 p.m.
