New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - Despite a three-hit night by designated hitter Carlos Sosa and a pair of extra-base hits by center fielder Adam Godwin, the New Jersey Jackals dropped their regular-season home finale to the Pittsfield Colonials, 7-5, on Wednesday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.
With the win, the Colonials clinch a playoff spot after winning seven of their last eight games while the Jackals now trail the Worcester Tornadoes by one game for the fourth and final playoff slot. The Jackals have four games remaining while the Tornadoes have five contests left.
Trailing 5-1 after two and a half innings, the Jackals plated a run in the third on a Jacob Butler RBI double before a two-run single by Sosa in the fourth cut the New Jersey deficit to 5-4.
Jackals' starter Chris Vasami (3-1) was knocked out of the game with two outs in the third after allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits in a losing effort. The Jackals bullpen pitched well, surrendering just two runs the rest of the way on Jason Taylor's second two-run homer of the night off Edward Rodriguez in the seventh inning to give the Colonials a 7-4 lead.
New Jersey cut it to 7-5 in the seventh when Sosa led off with a double and scored on an error by Matt Nandin, however Pittsfield closer Juan Padilla completed a four-out save to give the victory in the rubber match of the three-game series.
Pittsfield starter Jon Venters lasted just three innings after yielding three runs on seven hits. Reymond Cruz (1-2) earned the win out of the bullpen, tossing three innings of one-run relief.
The Jackals (39-49 overall, 20-22 second half) are off on Thursday before traveling north of the border to take on the Quebec Capitales in a four-game weekend series to conclude the regular season. A.J. Wideman () is slated to take the mound in the series opener for New Jersey on Friday at 7:05 p.m. at Stade Municipal.
