Tornadoes' Teammates Minicozzi, Zuercher Named Can-Am League Players Of The Month

DURHAM, NC - The Can-Am League announced today that Worcester Tornadoes INF Mark Minicozzi and LHP Zach Zuercher (pictured) have been named the Teamline Direct Batter and Pitcher of the Month for August. The selection was made by Pointstreak, the official statistician of the Can-Am League.

Minicozzi was named the Can-Am League Player of the Week on Monday, putting an exclamation point on a very strong August. He hit .390 on the month in 105 at-bats, scoring 24 runs and tallying 41 hits for the Tornadoes. He failed to reach base in just one August game, and carried a 13-game hitting streak into mid-August, which he originally began on July 30th. He also added eleven walks to account for an on-base percentage of .444. Minicozzi was a run-producer in addition to a sparkplug, however, socking 14 extra-base hits (7 home runs) and collecting 19 RBI. The 27-year-old is now batting .313 (T-8th in the league) with 100 hits, 12 home runs, and 52 RBI on the season. He was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 17th round of the 2005 MLB Draft.

Zeurcher made six starts in August and recorded victories in each appearance. His 2.01 ERA for the month spanned 40.1 innings pitched, and he shutout the opposition in three of his six starts. Zeurcher struck out 41 batters on the month, including the a 2010 Can-Am League season high of 14 in a dominant one-hit shutout against Brockton Saturday, August 28th, tying an all-time league record. Opponents batted just .180 against Zeurcher and managed only eight extra-base hits against him. Overall, Zeurcher has posted a 6-2 record this season with a 4.25 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 76.1 innings. The 26-year-old was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 9th round of the 2005 MLB Draft.
