Canucks assign Funk & Nycholat to Moose

The Vancouver Canucks today announced they have assigned defencemen Michael Funk and Lawrence Nycholat to the Manitoba Moose.

Funk, 23, appeared in 13 games last season with the Portland Pirates where he recorded a goal and three points, along with eight penalty minutes. In 152 career games in three pro seasons in the AHL with Portland and Rochester, the Abbotsford, BC native has scored 20 points (3-17-20) and 169 penalty minutes. Funk has also played in nine career NHL games with the Buffalo Sabres where he has two assists. Funk was originally drafted by the Sabres in the second round, 43rd overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

Nycholat, 30, played in three games with the Moose last season after being re-assigned to Manitoba for conditioning on Nov. 6/08. In that span, he collected three assists. The Calgary, AB native also played in 14 games with the Canucks last year and five games with the Colorado Avalanche. In that span, he had one assist and six penalty minutes. As a result, Nycholat native has now played in 50 career NHL games in nine pro seasons with Colorado, Vancouver, Ottawa, and Washington. In that time, he's scored nine points (2-7-9). In 486 games in the AHL with Binghamton, Hershey, Hartford, and Houston, Nycholat has scored 55 goals and 221 assists for 276 points and 726 penalty minutes.

The Moose will open their 14th regular season this Friday, Oct. 2nd against the Houston Aeros at the MTS Centre.
