Great Lakes Loons News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. - You figure a team that won their division's first-half championship has already played their best baseball of the year. That may not be the case for the Great Lakes Loons. With a 10-3 win over the West Michigan Whitecaps on Sunday night, the Loons have now won 14 of 18 and have held their opponents to a combined nine runs over their last five games.
Sunday's win marked the first time since July 1st the Loons reached double-digit runs. The Loons racked up 10 runs on 12 hits and eight walks. Seven Loons reached base multiple times including Chris Roller who has paced the offense over the last two days with two home runs, a triple, six RBIs and four runs scored.
The scoring began right away as the Loons drew three walks in the first inning off Austin Sodders (L, 0-1) and scored their first run on a wild pitch. With a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning, the Loons got a home run from Roller to make the score 6-2.
In the seventh, now deep into the Whitecaps bullpen, the Loons added four more runs to their lead on two separate two-run hits. Jacob Amaya reached for the third time with a two-RBI single and Romer Cuadrado tallied his second double of the game making the score 10-2. West Michigan managed to score one run in the eighth but that was it.
Loons starter Jack Little was making his fifth start of the year and allowed his first earned runs of the season on home runs to Parker Meadows and Reynaldo Rivera. Jose Chacin took over for Little with two outs in the third inning and proceeded to tie a career-high with eight strikeouts. Chacin (W, 10-6) continues to pace the Midwest League in wins after allowing one run in five 1/3 innings.
The Loons are 5-0 on their current road trip and have a chance to cap it with a win against West Michigan on Monday at 7:05 p.m. EDT. Listen to radio coverage beginning at 6:30 on ESPN 100.9-FM.
