Lethbridge Hurricanes News Release
Lethbridge, AB - The Lethbridge Hurricanes kicked off their 2009-10 season on the road Friday night as they played the Kootenay Ice to a tough 8-1 loss in Cranbrook. The Canes got off to a slow start in the first period as Kootenay took the early lead off a goal from Max Reinhart. That?s when the rough stuff started as Austin Fyten, fresh off his trip to Detroit Red Wings training camp, was involved in the Canes first tilt of the 2009-10 regular season, the talented sophomore would leave the game with a laceration and would not return. The Ice would blast the Canes net, outshooting Lethbridge 16 to1 in the first frame. Joe Antilla would score for the ice while Reinhart scored his second near the end of the period to give the Ice a 3-0 lead going into the second.
The Ice continued to pour it on in the second as Domenic Pacovsky snapped home a high wrister over starter Michael Tadjdeh?s right shoulder just five minutes into the period. Tadjdeh would finish the night with about five minutes left in the second period after Kootenay?s fifth goal of the night, his evening coming to an end with a solid 28 saves on 33 shot performance. Finnish newcomer Ville Kolppanen would then have a rough welcome to the WHL as the Ice managed a pair of goals to extend their lead to 7-0 going into the final frame as the Canes continued to struggle with inopportune penalties and a physical Kootenay side and were outshot 39 to 4.
Lethbridge would continue to battle, but a injury and penalty shortened bench was unable to produce any offense. Brent Henke had a penalty shot mid way through the final frame that was stopped by Kootenay goaltender Nathan Liewen. Kootenay would add another power play goal just past the half way mark of the third to seal the deal but the Canes would break the shutout with just seconds left to play on a goal by veteran Cam Braes as Kolppanen ended his evening with 12 saves on 15 shots.
The Canes will look to rebound from tonight?s game with a trip down Highway 3 on Saturday to take on their old rivals ? the Medicine Hat Tigers. Due to renovations to the City of Lethbridge ENMAX Centre; the Canes play their first eight games on the road and will not hold their home opener until an October 9th matchup against Edmonton Oil Kings. Last season, the Hurricanes came up just short in their season series with the Tigers posting a 3-5-0-0 record. As hosts the Canes had a 2-2-0-0 record (Sept.26/08 (1-0OTW); Nov.21/08 (2-1L); Jan.21/09 (7-5W); Feb.20/09 (6-3L)) while notching a 1-3-0-0 record in the Gas City (Sept.27/08 (6-3L); Nov.10/08 (4-1L); Dec.8/08 (4-3OTW); Feb.21/09 (8-3L)) The Tigers hold the all time lead in the series as the Canes have a 85-99-6-2-3 lifetime record against the Tabbies.
