September 18, 2009 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release

The Portland Winterhawks have named defenseman Brett Ponich their captain for the 2009-10 season. Ponich, entering his third full season with the team, was taken in the second round of the 2009 NHL Draft by the St. Louis Blues, and just returned from the team's training camp.

Joining Ponich as associate captains for the 2009-10 season are forwards Chris Francis, Stefan Schneider and Luke Walker.

"I'm incredibly honored to be named captain of the Portland Winterhawks and join the many great players who have worn the 'C' for this franchise," said Ponich. "Being named team captain is something most players dream about, and it's a responsibility I take very seriously."

"Naming a captain was a difficult decision as we have so many quality people on our roster, but Brett is a natural leader who on and off the ice exemplifies what we want in a Winterhawk player," said Portland Winterhawks General Manager and Head Coach Mike Johnston. "Brett, Chris, Stefan and Luke are a great group for our young players to look up to."

Ponich becomes the 36th captain in Winterhawks history, a list that includes franchise legends like Braydon Coburn, Adam Deadmarsh, Paul Gaustad, Brenden Morrow, Brent Peterson, and Mike Williamson.

Season tickets for the 2009-10 season are on sale now. Call 503-236-HAWK to reserve your spot to all 36 games today.
