Canaries Win Streak Snapped

Lincoln, NE - The Sioux Falls Canaries (5-5) saw their five-game winning streak snapped in a 12-5 loss at the hands of the Lincoln Saltdogs (4-6)

The Canaries drew first blood in the top of the first inning. Cameron Coughlan singled and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Ben Van Iderstine drove Coughlan home with a single to give the Canaries an early, 1-0 lead.

The Saltdogs answered in the bottom of the first inning. Tony Garcia singled and Frederico Balet doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Bryan Warner hit a sacrifice fly to score Garcia and tie the game, 1-1. Brett Cooley, Josh Patton, and Seth Pietsch followed with a string of three consecutive singles. Patton's single scored Balet, and Pietsch's single scored Cooley. After one inning, the Saltdogs led, 3-1.

Lincoln added four more runs in the third inning. Warner and Cooley started the inning with singles to put two on base for Patton. Patton singled to score Warner and give the Saltdogs a 4-1 adavantage. Pietsch reached on a fielder's choice to score Cooley, giving Lincoln a 5-1 lead. Jay Yaconetti followed with a single to put two on base for Aaron Mendoza. Mendoza singled, scoring Pietsch, and putting the Saltdogs ahead by five. Lincoln had one more bullet in the inning. Garcia singled to score Yaconetti. After three innings, the Canaries trailed, 7-1.

The Canaries got one back in the fourth. Abner Arroyo singled to extend his current hitting streak to 18 games. After Matt Imwalle singled to advance Arroyo to second, Orlando Miller doubled to bring Abner home. Arroyo's run made it 7-2, Saltdogs.

The Saltdogs added five runs in the fifth. Yaconetti started the inning by hitting his third home run of the season to give Lincoln an 8-2 lead. Mendoza walked and Corey Harrington proceeded to hit his fourth home run of the season. The two-run shot put the Saltdogs ahead by eight, 10-2. The Saltdogs got two more runs in the inning without the benefit of a hit and took a 12-2 lead into the sixth inning.

The Canaries would get three runs in the late innings. In the seventh, Damon Lessler reached on an error by Saltdogs second baseman Josh Patton, and came around to score on a single by Will Smith. Smith would deliver again in the ninth. With the bases loaded, Smith singled to right field to score two, and make it a 12-5 final. The Canaries would not get any closer in the series-opening loss.

Jeff Landing (6-2) took the loss for the Canaries giving up seven runs on 12 hits in three innings of work. Dan Reichert (5-4) pitched eight innings to get the win for Lincoln.
