Canaries win fourth in a row

Lincoln, NE - The Sioux Falls Canaries (6-4) defeated the Lincoln Saltdogs (3-7) to extend their winning streak to a season-high four games on Friday night.

The Canaries took the lead in the top of the first inning. Anthony Monegan led off the game with a single. Ralph Santana followed with a bunt back to the pitcher. Saltdogs starter Roger Lincoln tried to make a play at second base, but threw the ball into centerfield. The throwing error allowed Monegan to third base. With runners on the corners, the Saltdogs caught Santana off of first base. With Santana in a pickle, Monegan came home to score and give the Canaries a 1-0 lead. Santana got back to first safely and advanced to third on a single by Chad Hermansen. Abner Arroyo followed by grounding into a fielder's choice to score Santana and put the Birds in front 2-0.

The Saltdogs got a run in the bottom of the first inning. Evan Tartaglia led off with an infield single and advanced to second base an errant pick off attempt by Canaries starting pitcher Tony Cogan. Tartaglia scored on a single by Cory Harris. After one inning, the Canaries led 2-1.

Lincoln tied the game in the third. Jay Yaconetti led off with a single and Pichi Balet walked. With runners on first and second and two away, Cory Harris hit a ground ball up the middle. Canaries second baseman Ralph Santana made a diving stop, but an errant backhand flip toward second missed shortstop Angelo Fermin. The error allowed Yaconetti to score, tying the game, 2-2.

The Canaries broke the tie in the fifth inning. Edgard Clemente hit a bases loaded double to score Ralph Santana and Chad Hermansen for a 4-2 lead. Later in the fifth, the Canaries had the bases loaded again and John Schmitz grounded into a fielder's choice to score Abner Arroyo for a 5-2 advantage.

Sioux Falls added two more runs in the seventh when Dennis Anderson hit his fifth homer of the season to give the Canaries a 7-2 lead.

The Saltdogs scored in the seventh inning when Evan Tartaglia singled and came home on Pichi Balet's double. After seven the Canaries led, 7-3.

The Birds added one more in the eighth. Angelo Fermin walked and advanced to third base on Anthony Monegan's third single of the night. Fermin scored when Ralph Santana grounded into a fielder's choice for the 8-3 final.

Tony Cogan (6-2) allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits in six innings to pick up the win for Sioux Falls. Roger Lincoln (4-4) took the loss for the Saltdogs. Matt Petrusek pitched the final three innings of the game for his third save of the season.

Bird Seeds: The win, combined with the St. Paul Saints 8-4 loss to the Shreveport Sports, gives the Canaries sole possession of first place in the North Division of the American Association. ... The Canaries recorded 10 hits in the game, marking the third game in a row the team has had 10 or more hits. ...
