Pensacola Pelicans News Release

1,579 fans made their way out to NASCAR Night at Pelican Park. They were not only treated to an exciting professional baseball game, and a Pelican win, but also the unique opportunity to check out authentic Rusty Wallace and Richard Petty cars. Drivers from Five Flags Motor Speedway were also on hand to meet the fans and show off their cars.

The Pelicans struck first, scoring three runs in the first three innings. A revamped lineup for the Pelicans featured Ed Montague in the leadoff spot, where he reached safely in his first three at-bats and scored in the first and the third. Montague walked and was followed by All-Star Carlos Mendoza who singled. Later in the inning slugger Larry Bethea came to the plate with Montague and Mendoza still waiting eagerly to score. They got their way and Bethea got the fans on their feet when he delivered with a double that scored both runners. Montague led off the third inning with a double and was later driven in by Juan Rocha for his 35th RBI of the season.

The Aviators and Pels traded runs in the fifth and sixth innings with each team scoring once in both. Bryon Smith got his 36th RBI, tying him for the Aviator lead, and Ryan Ruiz knocked in his 13th run. For the Pelicans, Rocha hit a sac fly to drive in his second run of the game and Larry Bethea hit his sixth homer of the season to put the Pelicans up 5-2.

The rest of the game was dominated by pitching as neither team managed another run. Tony Pierce got the call in the ninth and came in to record his 14th consecutive save of the season as the Pelicans took the game 5-2.

Pensacola will play the second of three games against Coastal Bend and continue with NASCAR Weekend at Pelican Park. The Rusty Wallace and Petty Cars will be at the Park for the weekend and tickets can be purchased by calling 934-8444.
