St. Joseph Blacksnakes News Release

ST. JOSEPH, MO - The Blacksnakes (6-5, 32-27) needed to receive a good start after a rough road trip for the starters, and Mark Nussbeck delivered. St. Joe picked up their fourth shutout in a 8-0 romp over Sioux City (5-6, 29-30) to open the three-game series at Phil Welch Stadium.

The ‘Snakes jumped on Sioux City starter Tom Lipari (6-4) for three first inning runs on RBIs by Wil Quintana, Terrell Merriman and Mark Burke and never looked back. They plated two more in the second and another in the third to knock out Lipari after a season-low 2 2/3 innings.

Leading 6-0 after three innings, Nussbeck cruised through seven strong innings and the offense put the dagger through with Misha Dworken knocking in a pair with a single in the sixth for the 8-0 margin.

Nussbeck (5-2) allowed just four hits in seven innings without a walk and striking out five. He lowered his second-best ERA in the league to 1.67, just behind league-leader Lindsay Gulin of Lincoln, at 1.65. He is also tied for the league lead in strikeouts with 70.

All nine starters had hits, with Misha Dworken driving in three runs on two hits. Scooter Jordan, Ben Thomas, Jake Whitesides also had two hits apiece in the win.

The ‘Snakes will host Sioux City again Saturday night at 7:05pm, with Evan Thomas (4-6) starting against Nate Holquin (1-0). Gates open at 6pm with "The Famous Chicken" entertaining fans at Phil Welch during the middle game of the series. Sunday's finale is also a 7:05pm game time before St. Joe and the league take three days off for the All-Star Break.
