
Canaries Use Longball to Down Wingnuts

SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Wichita Wingnuts (10-6) lost 11-6 to the Sioux Falls Canarie (6-11) at Sioux Falls Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Canaries scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the third to take a 6-2 lead. Kevin Dultz reached on an error by Abel Nieves to lead off the inning. Dultz went to second when Nick Van Stratten beat out a bunt attempt along the third base line. After Jake Taylor laid down a sacrifice bunt, J.P. Ramirez hit a sacrifice fly to left that scored Dultz with the go-ahead run. John Alonso, Tim Pahuta, and Nate Baumann added two-out, RBI singles later in the frame.
Alonso and Pahuta hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend Sioux Falls' lead to 8-2.
The Wingnuts scored four times in the top of the sixth to pull within two runs. Wichita loaded the bases with no outs on a double and two walks. Canaries' starter Adam Champion nearly worked out of the jam before hitting Jared McDonald with a pitch to force home the Wingnuts' third run. Ryan Khoury followed with a two-out, three-run double down the left field line against reliever Matt Daly to cut the lead to 8-6.
Sioux Falls responded in the bottom half with a two-out, three run homer from Clark.
Chris Smith took the loss for the Wingnuts, allowing eight runs, four earned, on eight hits in five innings. Smith walked two and struck out four.
Champion picked up the win, allowing six earned runs on six hits in five and two-thirds. Champion walked four and struck out five.
The Wingnuts took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second. C.J. Ziegler led off with a double. Colt Loehrs followed with a double to left-center that scored Ziegler.
Clark and Pahuta each hit solo home runs in the bottom of the second to give Sioux Falls a 2-1 lead.
Wichita tied it in the top of the third on a two-out, RBI single from John Rodriguez.
Ziegler and Jake Kahaulelio extended their hitting streaks to eight games. McDonald singled in the ninth and has hit safely in six in a row. Daniel Bennett threw two shutout relief innings for Wichita. Sioux falls totaled five home runs in the game.
The Wingnuts return home Monday night for a four-game series against the El Paso Diablos. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Ryan Hinson is scheduled to start for Wichita and will face El Paso right Carlos Monasterios.
