
Canaries swept in twin bill

Sioux City, IA - The Sioux Falls Canaries (11-26) were swept in a twin bill with the Sioux City Explorers (18-19) on Wednesday night, being defeated 8-0 in the continuation of last night's suspended game and 7-2 in the regularly scheduled game.
The evening started with the resumption of last night's game, which was suspended due to a power outage. The game was resumed with the beginning of the fifth inning and the Canaries trailing, 2-0.
The Explorers added to their lead in the sixth inning. With runners on the corners Mike Richardson singled to score Chris Grossman for a 3-0 lead. After Ryan Ruiz walked to load the bases, Alex Llanos singled to score Kevin Henry, making it 4-0. Dan Meier followed with a grand slam, his third homer of the season, and it was 8-0.
Aaron Garrison (2-3) suffered the game one loss. J.D. Scholten (3-2) pitched five innings of five-hit shutout baseball in picking up the win.
Dan Meier continued his power display by hitting his fourth home run of the year in game two of the twin bill. The first inning solo shot gave the Explorers a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, the Explorers pulled away. Alex Llanos and Dan Meier singled to put runners on the corners for Jorge Moreno. Moreno followed with a single to score Llanos making it a 2-0 game. After Chris Grossman was intentionally walked to load the bases Kevin Henry hit a ground ball up the middle to score Meier for a 3-0 lead. Moreno was thrown out at the plate for the second out of the inning. Mike Richardson followed with a groundball to second base that was misplayed by Chris Weber. The error allowed Chris Grossman to score for a 4-0 lead. J.J. Burress then struck out swinging, but was able to reach on a wild pitch. Canaries catcher David Hoffman threw the ball away at first base allowing Kevin Henry to score for a 5-0 lead.
The Canaries got their first run of the evening in the sixth inning. Jason Sugden doubled and scored on a single by Angelo Fermin to cut the deficit to 5-1.
The Explorers added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning. Kevin Henry hit his eighth home run of the year and Mike Richardson followed with his third home run of the season. The back-to-back home runs gave Sioux City a 7-1 lead.
Dennis Anderson led off the seventh inning with a solo homer, his third of the season for the 7-2 final.
Aaron Marsden (1-0) pitched six innings of one-run, four-hit baseball for the victory. Doug Johnson (2-4) went the complete game in the loss.
The series moves to the Birdcage on Thursday night where it will be a "Visor Giveaway" presented by Midwest Dairy. The first 500 women through the gates will receive a free Canaries visor courtesy of Midwest Dairy.
