Canaries Smacked by Saints, 12-4

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (24-2) were defeated 12-4 in the rubber game of the series with the St. Paul Saints (19-16) on Father's Day afternoon at the Birdcage.

The Saints put two runs on the board in the second inning. Marcel Longmire led off with a single. Brian Sprout followed with a triple down the left field line to score Longmire and give the Saints a 1-0 lead. Ben Thomas drove in Sprout with a single, and after the second inning the Saints led by a pair, 2-0.

Matt Brunson started the third inning with a bunt single and advanced to second when Skip Adams laid down a sacrifice bunt. Brunson then stole third for his 12th stolen base of the season, and Brent Krause drove him in on a double to left center to give the Saints a 3-0 lead.

St. Paul tripled their lead in the sixth inning. Brian Sprout and Adam Bourassa both singled and Alex Fonseca followed with a walk to load the bases. The Saints then strung together three singles in a row. Ben Thomas hit a single to left field scoring Sprout, 4-0. Ryan Priddy followed with a two RBI single to score Bourassa and Fonseca putting the Saints up 6-0. Brunson singled to load the bases. Krause followed with a bases clearing double to right field to give the Saints a 9-0 advantage.

The Birds came back in the bottom of the sixth inning. Angelo Fermin and David Keesee drew back to back walks. Fermin scored on a double by Will Smith to get the Birds on the board, 9-1. James Shanks followed with a sacrifice fly to centerfield scoring Keesee and pulling the Birds within seven, 9-2. With two outs in the inning, Abner Arroyo hit a single to right centerfield scoring Smith from second base narrowing the Saints lead again, 9-3. Arroyo advanced to third on a double by Ben Van Iderstine, and then scored on a passed ball. After the sixth, the Birds were back within five, 9-4.

The Saints took two runs back in the top of the seventh inning. Bourassa drew a walk and Fonseca singled putting runners on first and second. There was a double steal advancing the runners to second and third. On the throw to second base, Angelo Fermin committed a fielding error allowing Bourassa to score from third base, and give the Saints a 10-4 lead. Fonseca stole third base then scored when Priddy singled to left field putting the Saints up by seven, 11-4.

The Saints put one more run on the board in the top of the ninth. Fonseca reached base on a fielder's choice. Thomas drew a walk, pushing Fonseca to second. Priddy hit a single to right center allowing Thomas to score from second and seal the Saints 12-4 win.

Ryan Ford (1-2) suffered the loss for the Canaries. Adam Brandenburg (2-1) secured the win for the Saints.

The Canaries travel to Lincoln for a midweek series then return home on Friday for a weekend series against the El Paso Diablos. Friday will be "Friday Night Fireworks" presented by Schoeneman's Lumber.
