Cats Second Baseman Harkrider Retires

Fort Worth Cats second baseman Kip Harkrider, a key member of the 2006 American Association championship team, has retired from professional baseball, it was announced today.

Harkider played in 25 games with the Cats this season, batting .185 with 12 runs batted in. He was 2-for-2 with three RBI in his final game with the Cats on Wednesday night in Shreveport.

In 2006, Harkrider batted .317 with a homer and 31 runs batted in. He played 82 games for the Cats, 74 of those at second base. He stood out during the playoffs, posting a .435 batting average (20 hits in 46 at bats) with five RBIs in 10 games, helping the Cats to their 2006 American Association title.

He was a fifth-round selection of the Dodgers in the 1997 draft. He split time in '97 between Savannah in the South Atlantic League and Vero Beach of the Florida State League. The next season, he was at Double-A San Antonio where he played the 1998 and 2000 seasons with the Missions.

In 1996, Harkrider was a member of the Bronze-medal winning U.S. Olympic Baseball team in Atlanta and had two hits in eight at bats during the tournament.

Harkrider,31, played college baseball at the University of Texas. He was a three-time All-Conference shortstop for the Longhorns. He was named MVP of the Southwest Conference in 1996 after batting .381in 62 games.
