Coastal Bend wins 10-9

The Coastal Bend Aviators overcame a two-run ninth inning deficit and defeated the El Paso Diablos 10-9 on Sunday night at Cohen Stadium.

The Diablos crossed the plate first in the bottom of the first inning. Albenis Machado and Kory Drew led off the frame with back to back singles. Jorge Alvarez then hit a sharp grounder to second, William Lewis threw on to the shortstop James Lofton for one out and Lofton's return throw to first sailed over the head of Grant Richardson scoring Machado for the 1-0 advantage.

El Paso took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second. The Diablos plated two on an Albenis Machado RBI double to deep left field.

Coastal Bend answered in the top of the third. The Aviators scored three runs on three consecutive base hits off of Greg Wiltshire, cutting the lead to 4-3.

El Paso took a large lead in the bottom half of the third. Evan Conley propelled the Diablos with his first-homer of the year, a three run shot to deep left. Jordan Belcher also had an RBI single which gave El Paso an 8-4 lead.

The Aviators would crawl back and score four runs over the fourth and fifth innings against starter Greg Wiltshire. Grant Richardson had a two-RBI single in the bottom of the fourth which capped Coastal Bend's scoring. The El Paso lead was just 8-7 going into the bottom of the fifth.

El Paso added a run of insurance in the bottom of the eighth. Joel Izquierdo led off the frame with a walk. Albenis Machado moved Izquierdo to second with a bunt. Two batters later, Jorge Alvarez rocketed a pitch off the left field wall which plated Izquierdo for the 9-7 advantage.

Ned Darley who threw a perfect eighth, came in for the ninth going for the six-out save. Darley yielded back-to-back base hits to start things off. Darley then walked Juan Figueroa to load the bases. The next batter Grant Richardson tapped a grounder to first, Walter Olmstead fielded it and flipped to Darley who fumbled the throw which allowed Richardson to reach and scored J.D Foust from third. Darley then walked Steve Ketter plating another Aviators run. Finally, William Lewis hit a sacrifice fly to right field which scored Juan Figueroa for the go-ahead run.

Thomas Atlee was summoned to pick up his second save in two nights. After yielding a lead off single to Matt Kent, Atlee retired three straight Diablos to close out the game.

Greg Wiltshire threw five innings allowing seven runs off of 10 hits with three walks and six strikeouts.

J.R Pickens tossed seven full allowing seven earned runs off of one walk with five strikeouts.

Miguel Martinez gets the win (1-1) as he threw one inning allowing one run.

Ned Darley gets the loss (3-2) as he threw two innings allowing three runs off of two hits with two walks and one strikeout.

Thomas Atlee picks up his sixth save of the season as he threw a scoreless ninth inning.
