Canaries overcome by big fourth inning

Lincoln, NE - The Lincoln Saltdogs (13-3) scored five runs in the fourth inning en route to a 9-4 win over the Sioux Falls Canaries (4-12) on Sunday in Lincoln. The Saltdogs win completed a sweep in the weekend series.

Canaries lead-off batter Ralph Santana singled to start the first inning. An errant pickoff throw by Saltdogs pitcher Roger Lincoln allowed Santana to go from first to third. Santana then scored on a double by Abner Arroyo for a 1-0 lead.

Lincoln tied the game in the bottom of the second inning. Josh Patton singled and advanced to third on a single by Kevin Sullivan. Patton came in to score on a groundout by Paul Powell for the 1-1 tie.

The Saltdogs took the lead in the third on a solo home run by Cory Harris. Harris' second home run of the year made it 2-1, Saltdogs.

In the fourth inning, Lincoln extended their lead. Kevin Sullivan, Brett Cooley, and Powell each singled to load the bases. Sullivan scored on a groundout by Jay Yaconetti to make it 3-1. After Harris was intentionally walked, Jose Torres grounded to shortstop. Ralph Santana flipped the ball to second baseman Kyle Kmiecik to force out Harris as Cooley scored to make it 4-1. Kmiecik's relay throw to first base was errant and allowed Powell to come home for a 5-1 lead. After a single by Bryan Warner advanced Torres to third base, a balk by Evan Greusel allowed Torres to score, and it was 6-1. Patton singled to score Warner and give the Saltdogs a 7-1 lead after four innings.

The Canaries rallied in the fifth. David Hoffman led off with a walk and Santana singled to put two on for Chad Hermansen. Hermansen doubled to scored Hoffman, Santana scored on a groundout by Edgard Clemente and Hermansen scored on Abner Arroyo's second RBI double of the day making it 7-4.

Lincoln would score single runs in the bottom of the fifth and bottom of the sixth en route to a 9-4 final.

Evan Greusel (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs on eight hits in four innings. Roger Lincoln (2-1) picked up the win for Lincoln allowing four runs on eight hits in five innings.

The Canaries are off on Memorial Day and will resume play with a single game against the Sioux City Explorers on Tuesday night in Sioux City. The team then returns home to host the Explorers at the Birdcage on Wednesday and Thursday night.
