Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Grand Prairie, TX - The Sioux Falls Canaries (21-27) suffered an 11-10 loss against the Grand Prairie AirHogs (23-25) in the final game of the first half on Sunday night at QuikTrip Park.
The AirHogs opened the scoring in the first inning. Aaron Garza was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Garza then stole second base to get in scoring position. Cesar Nicolas singled to score Garza and put the AirHogs ahead, 1-0. The bases were loaded for Chad Gabriel after singles by Mike Conroy and Javier Brito. Gabriel singled to score Nicolas. Conroy tried to score on Gabriel's single but was thrown out at the plate by Canaries centerfielder Jared Lemieux. After an inning, the Birds trailed, 2-0.
The Birds offense scored five runs in the second inning. After the bases were walked loaded, Jared Lemieux singled to score J.D. Reininger and cut the Grand Prairie lead in half, 2-1. Tim Hutting was then hit by a pitch to force in the tying run. Joe Anthonsen hit a ground ball to the second baseman. Anthonsen's speed kept the Canaries out of a double play, and Ken Lup scored a run to put the Canaries in front, 3-2. Cory Harris followed with a single to score Lemieux. The hit by Harris gave the Canaries a 4-2 lead, and extended Cory's consecutive games on-base streak to 41. Trevor Lawhorn added one more run by plating Anthonsen on a single to put the Birds ahead by three, 5-2.
Grand Prairie answered with six runs of their own in the bottom of the second inning. A double and two walks loaded the bases for Nicolas. Nicolas doubled to clear the bases and tie the game, 5-5. A walk and a two-out single reloaded the bases for Ron Fenwick. Fenwick hit the inning's second bases-clearing double to drive in three more, and give Grand Prairie an 8-5 lead.
The Canaries scored once in the third and twice in the fourth to tie the game. With the bases loaded in the third, Tim Hutting hit a sacrifice fly to plate Patrick Reilly and pull the Birds within a pair, 8-6. An inning later, Harris scored on a double by Reininger, and Reininger scored on a Kyle Eveland sacrifice fly to tie the game, 8-8.
Grand Prairie took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Three walks loaded the bases for Fenwick. Fenwick did not deliver a three-run double on this occasion. Instead he grounded out to the third baseman, a play which did allow Nicolas to score, giving the AirHogs a 9-8 lead.
The AirHogs added two more in the fifth. Drew Holder opened the inning with a triple. Holder scored on a single by Brandon Carter, and Carter came home on a double by Mike Conroy. After five innings, the AirHogs led by three, 11-8.
Pat Mahomes came into the game for Grand Prairie in the ninth inning. Kyle Eveland drew a walk off Mahomes to start the ninth. Patrick Reilly followed with a double to score Eveland and pull the Canaries within two, 11-9. After Ken Lup grounded out, Jared Lemieux singled to score Reilly and cut the AirHogs lead to one, 11-10. With the tying run on base, Mahomes got Tim Hutting and Joe Anthonsen to ground out, ending the game with the Canaries a run short.
Matt Green (3-4) picked up the win by pitching three innings of relief. Angelo Morales (1-4) gave up three runs on three hits in 3.1 innings to suffer the loss for the Canaries. By holding on for the win in the ninth, Mahomes got his first save of the season.
The Canaries return to Sioux Falls for a 7:05 p.m. game against the Fort Worth Cats on July 7. The game, which will mark the beginning of the second half, will feature a "Fly Away Giveaway" presented by Allegiant Air.
