St. Paul Saints News Release
SIOUX CITY, IA (July 5, 2009) - The St. Paul Saints can now concentrate on the second half of the season, but they may have built a little momentum as they came from behind to defeat the Sioux City Explorers 13-6 on Sunday night at Lewis and Clark Park in the final game of the first half.
With the Saints trailing 4-0 in the fourth Jason Cooper doubled to left with one out. Jake Butler was then hit by a pitch and Brent Krause followed with an RBI single making it 4-1. After a walk loaded the bases, Tony Mansolino's fielder's choice plated Jake Butler cutting the deficit to 4-2.
In the sixth the Saints sent nine men to the plate and took the lead. Cooper led off with a single to center and with one out Krause singled him to second. Jeff Eure then singled to left field scoring Cooper. Justin Nelson's throw to the plate was cut off by catcher Brett Meiras between home and the pitchers mound. He threw it to second as Eure was trying to go to second base. Krause broke for the plate and the throw back home wasn't in time tying the game at four. Mansolino then reached on a fielder's choice and after two walks loaded the bases, Andrew Schmiesing's grounder to third was booted by Landon Camp allowing Mansolino to score and take a 5-4 lead.
After the Explorers tied the game in the bottom of the inning the Saints took the lead for good in the seventh when Jake Butler singled and Krause doubled him to third. With two outs Mansolino hit a grounder to third that went off Camp's glove and allowed both runs to score making it 7-5.
The Saints put the game away in the ninth, sending 11 men to the plate and scoring six runs, two coming off the bat of Jake Butler's 11th homer of the season. Scott Knazek also tripled in a pair.
Krause finished the night 4-4 with two doubles, an RBI and three runs scored while Cooper was 3-6 with a double and three runs scored. Jake Butler went 2-4 with a homer, two RBI and three runs scored.
The Saints begin the second half of the season Monday night at Lawrence-Dumont Satdium against the Wichita Wingnuts at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Brandon Kintzler (6-2, 2.48) to the mound against Wingnuts LHP Brad Davis (4-3, 3.93). The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
