Canaries go up two games to zero

Sioux Falls, SD - Tim Hutting went 3-for-4 with five RBI to lead the Sioux Falls Canaries to a 7-1 win and a two games to none lead over the Sioux City Explorers in the Best-of-Five American Association North Division Playoff Series

Sioux City took the lead in the top of the first inning. Dustin Jones led off the game by reaching on an infield single. Nick McCoola advanced Jones to second on a sacrifice bunt, and Jones took third on a passed ball. Alex Llanos grounded out to score Jones and give Sioux City an early 1-0 lead.

The Canaries used a big third inning to take the lead. Patrick Reilly led off the inning with an infield single and advanced to third on a hit-and-run single by Paul Smyth. Tim Hutting delivered a two-run double to put the Canaries ahead, 2-1. Hutting came around to score on a pair of wild pitches for a 3-1 lead. Josh Patton capped off the scoring in the big inning with a single to bring home Will Smith. After three innings, the Canaries led 4-1.

Tim Hutting's big night continued in the sixth. With two on and one out, Hutting singled to score Ben Van Iderstine and give the Canaries a four-run lead, 5-1.

The Birds capped off the win with two more Hutting-produced runs in the eighth. With two in scoring position and two outs, Hutting singled to score Ben Van Iderstine and Paul Smyth for the 7-1 final.

Ryan Ford (1-0) pitched 7.2 innings allowing one run on eight hits to get the win for the Canaries. Alexander Francisco (0-1) saw a six-start win streak against the Canaries that dates back to last season come to a close after giving up five runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings of work.

The series now moves to Sioux City where the Canaries will need one win in order to advance to the American Association League Championship Series. Game Three takes place on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Travis Kane (11-6, 3.45) will be on the mound by the Canaries and he will be opposed by Sioux City Explorers RHP Paige Dumont (7-4, 3.34)
