AirHogs Go Up In Series 2-0

Fort Worth, TX (08.26.08) - The Grand Prairie AirHogs used some late game heroics, scoring two runs in the top of the ninth, to overtake the Fort Worth Cats 4-2 on Tuesday night. Grand Prairie takes the 2-0 lead in the best of five series.

Tied at two, David Espinosa came up to the plate with two outs and the go-ahead run on first base in the top of the ninth. He connected on a ground ball down the first base line that knocked off the bag and popped into the air, heading straight into right field. Aaron Garza would score from first and give Grand Prairie the 3-2 lead. Espinosa, who reached second on the RBI double, was plated on a flare into right center by Drew Holder. The AirHogs took the 4-2 lead.

James Morrison (2 saves) pitched a hitless ninth inning, allowing just one runner to reach on a walk.

Fort Worth got things started with a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first inning. With runners on first and second, Nelson Teilon ripped a line drive down the left field line, plating Ed Montague from second base.

In the top of the fourth, Billy Munoz got Grand Prairie on the board. He parked a solo shot into the bleachers in right field, knotting up the score at 1-1.

Grand Prairie took their first lead in the top of the sixth. Edwin Maldonado lined an RBI single up the middle to bring David Espinosa in all the way from second. The AirHogs would leave the bases loaded to end the inning.

Nelson Teilon crushed a solo shot to left field in the bottom of the sixth, knotting up the score at 2-2.

Jose Cordero started for Grand Prairie and garnered the no-decision. He lasted 6.2 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts with a hit-by-pitch. Geivy Garcia (2-0) got the victory for the second straight night, pitching a scoreless 1.1 innings with one strikeout.

Lee Gwaltney started for Fort Worth and got the no-decision. He went seven innings, allowing two runs, both earned, on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Jon Hunton (0-1) earned the loss. He went one inning, surrendering two runs on three hits with a strikeout.

The Veterans played crucial roles in the game today. All four veteran hitters (Espinosa, Maldonado, Nicholson, and Munoz) came up with at least one hit. Combined the group had seven of the AirHog's 10 hits.

Grand Prairie will take on the Fort Worth Cats in game three of the Southern Division Championship back at QuikTrip Park with a 7:05 PM first pitch. RHP Jeff Jamnik (1-2, 3.03 ERA) will face RHP Dan Grybash (8-5, 3.18 ERA).
