
Canaries double up Saints

Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
St. Paul, MN - The Sioux Falls Canaries (11-14) doubled up the St. Paul Saints (13-13) in an 8-4 win at Sioux Falls Stadium on Tuesday night. Grant Richardson and Paul Smyth both homered for the Canaries in the victory.
The Canaries took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Grant Richardson hit his 10th home run of the season to give the Canaries an early 1-0 lead.
St. Paul tied the game in the second inning. Brent Krause walked, stole second base, and advanced to third on a groundout by Kevin Sullivan. Krause came in and scored on a sacrifice fly by Heath Keel to even the score, 1-1.
The Birds went ahead to stay in the bottom of the second inning. Josh Patton drew a lead off walk and advanced to third on a double by Patrick Reilly. An intentional walk to Paul Smyth loaded the bases for Tim Hutting. Hutting hit a sacrifice fly to plate Patton and give the Canaries back the lead, 2-1. The Birds would add one more in the inning when Reilly scored on a single by Bibbs to put the Canaries ahead by two, 3-1.
Each team scored a run in the third inning. St. Paul closed the gap when Ryan Priddy doubled and scored on a groundout by Pichi Balet. The Canaries got the run back in the home half of the third when Beau Torbert doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ben Van Iderstine. After three innings the Canaries were up 4-2.
The Birds broke open the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Paul Smyth led off the inning with his sixth home run of the season to give the Canaries a 5-2 lead. Tim Hutting singled and Grant Richardson walked to put two on. After a passed ball advanced them into scoring position, Will Smith delivered a two-run single to put the Canaries ahead by five runs, 7-2.
Both sides scored in the fifth. Ben Thomas singled to score Ryan Priddy in an inning where the Saints got help from a Canaries error. The Canaries got the run back when Smyth doubled and scored on a single by Bibbs. After five innings the Canaries led, 8-3.
The Saints would threaten a comeback in the sixth inning. Brent Krause opened the inning with a double. Kevin Sullivan followed by grounding into a fielder's choice. Sullivan reached first as the Canaries tagged out Krause trying to advance to third. Heath Keel followed with a single, and Josh Womack walked to load the bases for St. Paul. Ryan Priddy came up with the bases loaded and grounded to the second baseman Josh Patton. Priddy beat out a double play to allow Sullivan to score and pull the Saints within four, 8-4. After Tony Mansolino walked, Ben Thomas came to the plate as the tying run. The Canaries brought in Kelly Casares, who struck out Thomas and ended the final real threat of the game in the Canaries 8-4 win.
Travis Kane (8-5) picked up the win for the Canaries pitching 5.2 innings and giving up four runs, three earned on eight hits. Justin Lord (5-9) left the game after two innings in suffering the loss.
The Canaries have Wednesday off and will be back in action at the Birdcage on Thursday night when they open a three-game series with the El Paso Diablos. At Thursday's game the first 500 fans of all ages will receive a Canaries Wall Clock Giveaway presented by Schoeneman's Lumber.
