AirHogs Even Up Series at Two

July 29, 2008 - American Association (AA)
Pensacola Pelicans News Release

The Pensacola Pelicans (7-18) fell 12-2 to the Grand Prairie Airhogs (17-7) in game two of the three game set. The Airhogs would take advantage of sub par Pelican pitching as the staff would walk seven batters and allow four homeruns on the night. The Pelicans would struggle at the plate tonight as five Airhog pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts.

Pelican's starter John Webb would run into some control issues early as he would walk three batters in the top half of the third, giving way to two Airhog runs. J.B. Tucker and Derek Nicholson would lead off the inning with back to back walks. A passed ball would advance the runners to second and third before Brandon Carter knocked a two RBI single down the right field line to give the Airhogs a 2-0 lead.

The Pelicans would answer right back in the bottom half of the inning with a run of their own. Evan Conley reached base to lead off the inning by getting hit by the pitch. With one down, Adam Deleo would rip his first double as a Pelican down the left field line and pick up his first RBI of the season as Conley would come around to score.

Up by one, the Airhogs would add four more runs to their lead in the top of the fourth. Carter drove in his second RBI of the game on a single to right as Mike Conroy would come around to score. With a runner on second, David Espinosa would drive in Aaron Garza for the second run of the inning. Back-to-back walks from Webb would load the bases. J.B. Tucker would then come up and drive in two runs on a single to left center to make it 6-1.

The Airhogs would tack on another run in to half of the fifth inning. Consecutive doubles from Carter and Garza would make it a 7-1 ballgame.

A Nicholson two run homer in the sixth would give the Airhogs a commanding 9-1 lead.

The Airhogs' Drew Holder, Billy Munoz and J.B. Tucker would knock back-to-back-to-back homeruns to lead off the top of the eight. This would put the Airhogs up 12-1.

The Pelicans would add a run in the bottom of the ninth on a bases loaded walk by Brandon Sing to put the final score at 12-2.

Dan Smith will take the mound tomorrow night in the rubber match against Grand Prairie.
