Canaries cruise past Explorers, 5-2

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (14-16) took the win over the Sioux City Explorers (14-17) in the first of their pair of games at the Birdcage.
In the top of the second inning, a solo homer by Kevin Henry, his 14th of the season, put the Xs ahead, 1-0.
In the bottom of the second, Abner Arroyo singled to get on first base. Two outs later, the Canaries got three consecutive singles from Chris Hall, David Hoffman, and Angelo Fermin. Arroyo scored on Hoffman's hit and Hall scored on Fermin's hit to give the Birds an early 2-1 lead.
The Explorers tied the game, 2-2, when Jorge Moreno and Ryan Gripp led off the fourth inning with back-to-back doubles in the fourth.
The Canaries went back ahead in the fifth inning. With two outs, Anthony Monegan, Ralph Santana, and Abner Arroyo hit three consecutive singles to score a run and take a 3-2 lead.
Anthony Monegan scored his second run of the game in the seventh. Monegan got on with a double and scored on a single by Arroyo increasing the Canaries lead over the Explorers, 4-2.
Chris Hall doubled in the eighth and scored on a single by Fermin. Fermin's second RBI of the night put the Canaries ahead by the 5-2 final.
Matt Koziara (3-2) pitched seven innings allowing two runs on five hits for the win and Billy Keppinger suffered the loss (9-4). Matt Montgomery picked up his team-leading seventh save of the season.
The Canaries will host the Sioux City Explorers again tomorrow night in the second of their pair of games at the Birdcage. Kent Hrbek will be out at the Birdcage tomorrow to sign autographs and promote his television show, Kent Hrbek Outdoors on KSFY. Following tomorrow night's game, the Canaries will host the Fort Worth Cats for a three-game series.
