Pensacola Pelicans News Release
The Pensacola Pelicans announce today the re-signing of veteran right-handed pitcher Clint Sodowsky.
After starting out the season with the Pelicans, Sodowsky's contract was purchased by the Atlanta Braves and was assigned to the double-A Mississippi Braves in late June. In his first start with the Braves on June 24, he scattered six hits in five innings of work. He allowed only two earned runs and struck out four but did not factor into the decision. However, in the game Sodowsky strained his pitching arm and was placed on the disabled list shortly after. After rehabilitating, Sodowsky is now fully recovered and back with the Pelicans for the remaining games of the 2006 season.
The right-handed Sodowsky was the opening day starter for the Pelicans and appeared in a total of eight games. When he signed with the Braves, he left the Pelicans with a 5-1 record, was leading the league with 56 strikeouts, and was among the top ten pitchers with a 2.45 ERA. In 55 innings of work, he walked only 18 batters and allowed 15 earned runs.
"We are glad Sodowsky is healthy again and he wants to play with the Pelicans," said Pelicans general manager Talmadge Nunnari. "With only a month left in our season, he will provide stability and leadership on the team."
With Sodowsky, the Pelicans led the league with a team ERA of 3.59 and they had league high 316 strikeouts. They also allowed the fewest runs in the league (147) and gave up the fewest hits (346).
The Pelicans are in the midst of a seven-game road trip through Texas to play the Coastal Bend Aviators and the El Paso Diablos. They return home on Monday, August 14 for a three-game series against the Coastal Bend Aviators. Monday will be Bark in the Park, where fans can bring "man's best friend" to a game. Tuesday is another Tuesday Madness and Wednesday is Family Night. All games start at 6:35 p.m.
Fans may purchase tickets on-line at www.pensacolapelicans.com or by calling the Pelicans office at 850-934-8444.
