Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Sioux Falls, SD - A five-homerun barrage helped the Sioux Falls Canaries erase an eight-run deficit en route to a 16-10 victory over Kansas City on Sunday.
Each team homered in their half of the first inning; Jan Hernandez hit a two-run shot and Trey Michalczewski delivered a solo blast. But Kansas City erupted for seven runs over the next three innings to build a commanding 9-1 lead midway through the fourth.
Wyatt Ulrich brought in a run with a sacrifice groundout in the home half before Jabari Henry belted a two-run homerun. Gavin LaValley delivered an RBI double off the right field fence before the Monarchs could escape the inning.
Sioux Falls struck again in the bottom of the sixth when John Nester was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. A batter later, Shamoy Christopher put the Birds in front with a towering grand slam.
Matt Adams drew a bases-loaded walk in the eighth inning to help Kansas City tie the game but the Birds responded with six runs in the home half. Nester uncorked a grand slam of his own and Ulrich followed with a two-run inside-the-park homerun.
Ulrich finished the game with four hits while Michalczewski and LaValley each added three. Nester totaled five RBI and Christopher had four as the Birds move to 13-27 overall. Sioux Falls now hits the road for a six-game roadtrip to Sioux City and Cleburne beginning Tuesday night.
