Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
FARGO, N.D. â - Fargo-Moorhead starter Kevin McGovern (5-1) pitched seven scoreless innings and allowed only seven total baserunners to lead the RedHawks (29-11) to a 6-1 victory over the Kane County Cougars (20-19) on Sunday afternoon at Newman Outdoor Field. Fargo-Moorhead scored four of their six runs in the game in the fourth inning. The RedHawks have now won their last six series and are 13-2 in their last 15 games.
The game was completed in only two hours and 35 minutes, however there was a 13-minute delay in the bottom of the first inning after home plate umpire Reggie Drummer was hit by a foul ball. Jeff Osborne replaced Drummer at home plate for the remainder of the game, as Drummer left and did not return.
Third baseman Leo Piña opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Piña led the RedHawks in hits (3), runs scored (2), and runs batted in (2) on Sunday afternoon. Catcher Christian Correa drove in another run on an RBI single and shortstop Sam Dexter hit a sacrifice fly to make it a 4-0 game.
Fargo-Moorhead would score a run each in the fifth and sixth inning to extend their lead to 6-0. Right fielder John Silviano and first baseman Manuel Boscan drove in the runs on a single and sacrifice fly, respectively. Kane County right-handed starter Ryan Tapani (4-4) allowed the six runs on nine hits and three walks in 5.1 innings pitched and earned the loss. Danny Taggart, Koby Bishop, and Westin Muir combined to pitch the final 2.2 innings of the game.
The real story of the game, however, was Kevin McGovern's pitching performance. The lefty struck out 10 batters and allowed only two runners to even reach scoring position. He now has 59 strikeouts on the season. RHP Tanner Riley pitched two innings of relief and allowed a run on a hit and two walks but struck out three batters.
Fargo-Moorhead will now travel north to face the Winnipeg Goldeyes (22-17) in a three-game series at Shaw Park beginning on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. The RedHawks are 2-1 against the Fish so far this season.
