Canadians Do Just Enough in Shutout Win
August 11, 2023 - Northwest League (NWL)
Vancouver Canadians News Release
VANCOUVER, BC - In a game that took just two hours and six minutes, the Canadians dispatched the Tri-City Dust Devils [Angels] 1-0 in front of a sellout crowd at Rogers Field at Nat Bailey Stadium Friday afternoon for their Northwest League-best tenth shutout win of the season.
Three consecutive one out hits in the bottom of the first - the only hits of the game for the C's offense - put the Canadians in front for good. Garrett Spain got it started with a single, Alex De Jesus followed with a base hit then Cade Doughty singled home Spain from second to make it 1-0 Vancouver.
A quartet of pitchers combined to blank the Dust Devils. Starter Hunter Gregory posted three consecutive zeroes before passing the torch to Anders Tolhurst (W, 2-0), who faced one batter over the minimum with one hit, no walks and three Ks in three innings of scoreless relief. Cooper Benson (H, 1) turned in two zeroes in the seventh and eighth before Conor Larkin (S, 1) set down the side in order in the ninth to secure his first career High-A save.
Tri-City starter Chase Chaney (L, 6-5) deserves a tip of the cap after logging his fifth consecutive quality start with six innings that featured no hits after the first inning, two walks and three strikeouts. Dylan Phillips went six up, six down in the seventh and eighth to keep the game close for the Dust Devils.
With the win, the Canadians take the series with four consecutive victories since Tuesday night. It's their 12th series win out of 17 total series this year. Vancouver is now 46-12 when scoring first, 10-1 in shutouts, 42-1 when leading after seven innings and 37-14 at home this year.
The series continues tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. Vancouver sends Rafael Sanchez to the slope to take on Tri-City's Nick Horvath. Coverage is available on CanadiansBaseball.com, Bally Live, the MiLB First Pitch app and the Sportsnet Radio Network.
