Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
SASKATOON, SK - Team Canada will play the Americans on New Years Eve, with an automatic bye to the Semi-Finals at the World Junior Hockey Championships on the line.
While the Americans were busy routing Latvia 12-1 in Tuesday's preliminary play, the Canadians were rolling to an easy 8-2 victory over Slovakia.
Taylor Hall, who is expected to go first overall in next year's National Hockey League Entry Draft, led the Canadian juniors with three goals - his first goals of the Tournament.
"But I knew that as long as I continued to do the right things and contribute to the team, eventually they'd come," Hall told Bill Beacon of the Canadian Press. "It was a fun night for me."
Brandon Wheat Kings' center Brayden Schenn, with his first goal in three games, Alex Pietrangelo, Luke Adam, Ryan Ellis and Stefan Della-Rovere also scored for Team Canada.
For a second year in a row, Tuesday's win sets up a clash between Canada and the U.S. with first place in their preliminary round group on the line.
While the World Junior Championship continues in Saskatoon, the World Under 17 Tournament began Tuesday in Timmins, Ontario with both western Canadian teams opening up with defeats. Quebec doubled up on Team West 4-2 while Russia downed Team Pacific 6-2.
Wheat Kings' prospect Liam Liston is a member of Team Pacific while Team West features four Brandon prospects - Austin Lewis, Jens Meilleur, Jordan Fransoo and Rene Hunter.
In other International hockey Tuesday, Germany beat the Canadian entry at the Spengler Cup 5-2 in Switzerland. The German club featured five Canadian born players.
