GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Detroit Red Wings on Monday recalled left wing Mitch Callahan from the Grand Rapids Griffins and reassigned defenseman Max Nicastro from the ECHL's Toledo Walleye to their AHL affiliate. In addition, the Griffins signed defenseman Marc McNulty to an amateur tryout.
Callahan, 22, ranks third on the Griffins in scoring with 40 points (25-15 - 40) and 51 penalty minutes in 66 games this season. The Wings will visit the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., when Callahan could make his NHL debut and become the 144th Griffins alumnus to play in the NHL.
Nicastro, 24, has skated in 58 games with the Walleye this season, garnering 16 points (0-16 - 16) and 28 PIM. A native of Thousand Oaks, Calif., Nicastro appeared in 25 games with Grand Rapids last season, posting three points (1-2 - 3) and 10 PIM. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound defenseman was Detroit's third choice (91st overall) in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.
