AHL Hershey Bears

Bears Still Trying To Climb Into Top Eight

March 24, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Hershey Bears News Release

The Hershey Bears Hockey Club picked up two out of a possible six points on the weekend, and continue to sit five points out of the Eastern Conference playoff picture with 11 games remaining in the regular season.

Hershey's first stop on their swing through a three-city Atlantic Division road trip was a return to Providence, where - on the Bears' last visit on May 8 - the Bruins claimed a Game Five victory in the 2013 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. The Bears' power play got going this past Friday, with both David Kolomatis and Ryan Stoa finding the net on four team chances. The Bears killed off all five Bruins power plays, and David Leggio made 28 saves in the game as the Bears blanked Providence 2-0.

The club then traveled to Worcester to face the Sharks on Saturday. Leads of 1-0 and 2-1 were built on goals by Wellman and Nicolas Deschamps, but Worcester's Dan DaSilva, Taylor Doherty and Travis Oleksuk scored late third-period goals in a span of 3:15 to send the Sharks to a 4-2 comeback victory. Leggio had a shutout streak of over 148 minutes snapped after DaSilva's goal, and the netminder finished with 36 more saves.

On Sunday, the league-leading Manchester Monarchs hosted the Bears, and became the first team to score a power play goal against Hershey on the weekend. The Monarchs scored two of them - one each by Zack O'Brien and Andrew Bodnarchuk - trumping Julien Brouillette's 10th goal of the season in a 2-1 victory. Philipp Grubauer made 34 saves to earn the game's third star.

HERSHEY BEARS NEWS AND NOTES

HE'S PLAYING WELL: RW Casey Wellman, since returning from NHL duty in Washington, has been contributing nicely offensively. Wellman led the Bears this weekend with three points, scoring goals in back-to-back games in Providence and in Worcester and chipping in an assist in Saturday's loss to the Sharks. Wellman's 16 goals rank second on the team, and he has increased his point total to 32 (16-16-32) in 49 games.

TWO MORE HIT 30: Bears captain Dane Byers (11-19-30) joined Wellman in reaching the 30-point plateau in the same game on Friday at Providence. Wellman assisted on the game-winning power play goal, while Byers added a helper on the insurance marker. The Bears have seven players on the active roster with 30 or more points on the season.

BROWN NETS FIRST: RW Chris Brown, currently on recall to Washington and the other player on the Hershey roster with over 30 points, netted his first NHL goal on Saturday at San Jose. The goal was a third-period tying goal that enabled the Capitals to take a 3-2 shootout victory and keep their playoff hopes strong. Brown scored one goal in each of his first two games in Hershey before his recall.

LEGG WORK: G David Leggio picked up his second Hershey shutout on Friday night at Providence, which was the Bears' fourth of the season. Combined with the last two periods on March 15 vs. Adirondack and nearly the first two periods of Saturday's game at Worcester, Leggio had shutout streak of 148:29 snapped in the game. The shutout was the Bears' first on the road since a 4-0 win at St. John's on October 19.

BROUILLETTE NETS TENTH: D Julien Brouillette tallied his 10th goal of the season in Sunday's loss at Manchester, pulling his season point total (10-10-20) just one shy of an AHL career best for the native of St. Esprit, Quebec. His AHL career high is 21 points (7-14-21) set in his first season with Hershey in 2011-12. The most goals Brouillette scored in one professional season (13) was in 2009-10 with the ECHL's Charlotte Checkers. Brouillette still leads all AHL defensemen in shooting percentage (10/46=21.7%) and is tied for third among AHL defensemen in power-play goals (seven).

100 FOR RECHLICZ: Sunday's game at Manchester was RW Joel Rechlicz's 100th in a Hershey sweater.
