Calgary Vipers News Release
Calgary's four-game winning streak was stopped Monday night with a 9-4 loss to the Winnipeg Goldeyes at Foothills Stadium. The Vipers ran into a hot pitcher in Winnipeg starter Josh Beshears (3-0) and could only muster up four runs on five hits in the game although they did manage to tag Beshears for his first earned runs allowed on the season.
Quintin Oldenburg (1-3) pitched five innings, giving up seven runs on eight hits to take the loss for the Vipers. He walked three Goldeye batters and struck out two.
After two scoreless innings, the Goldeyes jumped out to a big lead in the top of the third with a five-run outburst off Oldenburg.
Sean Walsh led off the inning with a single and stole second base. Max Poulin then walked and Aaron Mendoza was hit by a pitch to load the bases with none out. Former Viper Fehlandt Lentini then followed with a two-run single to put the Goldeyes up 2-0.
Jimmy Hurst also drew a walk in the inning before newly signed Goldeye Keith Maxwell and right-fielder Jimmy Hurst both brought runners in to score with base hits off Oldenburg.
Calgary closed to within two runs in the bottom of the fourth with the help of Adam Shorsher's first homerun of the year; a two-run shot that cleared the left-centerfield wall. Carlos Duncan also picked up an RBI double earlier in the inning that scored Josh Carter.
Winnipeg added two more in the fifth inning to push the lead to 7-3. A Max Poulin double off Oldenburg plated Maxwell. In his Goldeyes debut, Maxwell went 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs.
A sacrifice fly off reliever Ryokan Kobayashi made it 8-3 in the sixth before Aaron McEachran drove a long homerun the opposite way to close the gap to 8-4. The homer was McEachran's third of the year.
The Goldeyes added an insurance run in the eighth on a Matt Mann RBI single.
Calgary could not get any closer as Brian Stirm pitched two innings of shutout ball to polish off the win for the Goldeyes.
The Northern League's Pitcher of the Week, Javier Ortiz (1-1) will get the start for the Vipers in the second game of the four-game series when Calgary and Winnipeg meet again Tuesday night at 7:05 PM at Foothills Stadium.
