Calgary Hitmen And TELUS Remember

November 9, 2009 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Calgary Hitmen News Release

Calgary, AB - The Calgary Hitmen together with TELUS have created an event that focuses on Remembrance Day and its traditional recognition of veterans and current military personnel involved in peacekeeping efforts throughout the world.

On Wednesday, November 11th, the Calgary Hitmen will host the Kootenay Ice. Game time is 2:00 p.m. at the Pengrowth Saddledome.

As part of the game TELUS, the Hitmen organization and fans will acknowledge the contributions of our military personnel and families affected by war. Military members present and past will receive free admission to the game by either showing appropriate I-D or wearing their uniform. Military family members can also take advantage of a special $10 ticket.

Volunteers from TELUS will also be at the game collecting food in support of the Veteran's Food Bank. Hitmen fans attending the game are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item.

Hitmen Director of Business Operations Mike Moore stated "We are very honored and privileged to have the opportunity to recognize those who serve and have served our country in the name of peace and freedom."

"TELUS is proud to do our part and give back to the military community and this is one way we can show our appreciation for the brave men and women and their families who sacrifice so much in service of our great country," said Andrea Goertz, vice-president of TELUS Enterprise Services and Strategic Initiatives. "TELUS, the Hitmen and our community will showcase our heroes, and the vital role they play at home and abroad, and honour our veterans as we are reminded of the debt we owe to the more than 117,000 Canadians who, over the years, have died fighting for freedom in military conflicts and peace keeping missions around the world."

TELUS has also invited 100 families from the Calgary Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC) to take in the game.

Today, there are fewer and fewer veterans left from the World Wars and Korean War. Our troops in Afghanistan and throughout the world continue to serve for our country and it is important to remember their sacrifices on November 11th.
