November 9, 2009 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Kamloops Blazers News Release
Week in Review:
Tuesday, November 2, 2009 vs. Tri-City Americans
The hockey club got off to a good start as they outshot the Americans 17-15 but trailed 2-1. The wheels fell off for the home boys as the Blazers eventually fell 8-3 to the Western Conference leaders. Tri-City scored 3 goals in the first 5 minutes of the 2nd period which seemed to take the wind out of the Blazers. There were spurts of pressure put on by the hockey club, but nothing seemed to be going right as the Americans were too much for the Blazers to handle on this night. The goal scorers for the Blazers were Tyler Shattock, Brett Lyon with his 1st career WHL goal and Brendan Ranford. The special teams had a tough night as the hockey club was 1-for-5 on the powerplay and a dismal 5-for-9 on the penalty kill. Blazer goaltender struggled in net as he stopped 41 of 49 shots he faced. Final shots on goal were 49-28.
Friday, November 6, 2009 vs. Edmonton Oil Kings
The Blazers battled back from period deficits of 3-1 and 4-3 to come back and defeat the Edmonton Oil Kings 6-5 in overtime and end their 7 game losing streak. The Oil Kings and Blazers traded goals and posts all night, but it was the home team that prevailed in the end. After being down 4-1 in the 2nd period, the Blazers didn't give up and pushed back as Bronson Maschmeyer and CJ Stretch closed the gap to 4-3. Shayne Wiebe and Brendan Ranford then scored early in the third period, before Brent Raedke of the Oil Kings tied it with 37 seconds left. Jimmy Bubnick was the hero in overtime as he took a Brendan Ranford feed and put it over the shoulder of the Oil Kings tender. The hockey club was exceptional on the powerplay going 3-for-4 but poor on the penalty kill as they were 2-for-4. The Blazers outshot the Oil Kings 37-32 as Justin Leclerc made 27 saves for the victory.
Saturday, November 7, 2009 vs. Kelowna Rockets
On Saturday, the Blazers played solid in all aspects of the game as they cruised to a 5-3 victory over the Kelowna Rockets. It was the second win for the hockey club in as many nights. Dylan Willick kicked off the scoring as a bouncing puck beat the Rockets netminder. The Rockets came back to tie it, and go into the break with the score locked at 1-1. Jimmy Bubnick and Tyler Shattock would then each score important goals in the 2nd period as the Blazers took a 3-2 lead into the third period. Shattock would again, come up big, as he scored a late powerplay goal which turned out to be the game winner, and Jimmy Bubnick would add an empty netter to seal the win. The Blazers were 1-for-5 on the powerplay this night and only 3-for-5 on the penalty kill. After Justin Leclerc had a mediocre night Friday, he came back and played well as he stopped 39 of 42 shots he faced.
