OTTAWA - With his mother looking on from the stands, 3B Jordan Caillouet came in clutch with an RBI single that scored RF Steve Brown to walk-off the Trois-Rivières Aigles 3-2 on Thursday evening at RCGT Park in Ottawa.
"Jordan had a big day with a couple of RBIs," said Hal Lanier following his team's third straight victory. "He went with the slow breaking ball that their closer threw. We were fortunate enough to have a runner in scoring position."
The middle of the Champions order were the difference makers tonight. Brown, 2B Zak Colby and Caillouet were a combined 5-for-9 with all three RBIs. Brown scored all three runs, one of which came via a solo home run in the fourth inning.
Brown was able to reach base in the ninth by working a walk on Aigles RHP Ethan Elias. Elias then uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Brown to advance to second. Colby bunted Brown over to third, before Caillouet stepped up to play hero.
"We got good pitching throughout the whole game from Alvarez, Cooper and Maine," said Lanier. "Both teams had chances to score a lot more runs, but quality pitches got people out and that's how you win close ballgames."
The dramatic walk-off wouldn't have been possible without the work of the pitching staff. RHP Edilson Alvarez got the start and went six innings, giving up two runs. RHP Andrew Cooper then came on and threw two perfect frames, before LHP Scott Maine shutdown the Aigles in the top of the ninth to earn the win.
While the middle of the Champions order went recorded five hits, the rest of the lineup could only get three base knocks.
Aigles starter RHP Yender Caramo pitched into the eighth allowing only two runs, but ended up with a no-decision.
The Champions will be back at it tomorrow in the second game of their four-game series with the Aigles. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Tickets for all the weekend affairs are available at www.ottawachampions.com, in-person at the RCGT Park box office, or by calling 613-745-BALL (2255).
