New Jersey Jackals News Release

The New Jersey Jackals capped off their day-night doubleheader in style, defeating the Trois-Rivieres Aigles in walk-off fashion, by a score of 7-6 to complete the sweep of the twinbill at Yogi Berra Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Jackals offense, which didn't crack the scoreboard until the 11th inning of game one, wasted no time getting to Aigles starter Tyler Garkow in the nightcap. Connor Hofmann led off the home 1st with a single, and advanced to third on a single from Dean Green. He later scored on a screaming liner to right field from Danny Canela to give New Jersey the early 1-0 lead.

The Aigles, however, would answer right back in the top of the 2nd, when center fielder Michael Suchy cranked a monstrous solo home run to left field, his 7th of the season, to even the score.

The Jackals would regain the lead in the bottom of the 2nd, as Nolan Meadows led off the inning with a double off the right field wall, followed by a double down the left field line from Carlos Triunfel to plate Meadows and put the good guys up 2-1.

The score remained that way until the 5th, when the Jackals offense exploded for four runs. Rony Cabrera laced a double over the 3rd base bag to lead off the inning. Connor Hofmann then reached on a bunt single. Seth Spivey proceeded to drive in Cabrera with an RBI single to put the Jackals up 3-1. After a walk to Dean Green loaded the bases, David Harris grounded into a fielder's choice, bringing home Hofmann. Danny Canela then delivered with a missile over the center fielder's head for a two run double to extend the lead to 6-1, and effectively ending Tyler Garkow's evening.

The Aigles refused to roll over, as they ignited a four-run rally of their own in the 6th. David Glaude tripled into the right field corner to begin the inning. He would score on an error by Jackals second baseman Rony Cabrera on an Alexi Colon grounder. Two batters later, after advancing to second on a Kevin Cornelius single, and then to third on a wild pitch, Michael Suchy came through once again, lifting a sacrifice fly to plate Colon and close the gap to 6-3. Sam Dexter then doubled to left, allowing Cornelius to get to third, and Anthony Hermelyn walked to load the bases. Alex Herceg came through with a two run single to cut the Jackals lead to 6-5, thus ending Vic Black's outing. Jackals reliever Evan DeLuca entered the game and struck out David Glaude to escape the nightmarish inning, holding the lead.

Trois-Rivieres struck again in the 7th, as Alexi Colon walked, and came all the way home to tie the game on a Javier Herrera double. Vin Mazzaro relieved DeLuca with 2 outs in the 7th inning, and threw one pitch, stranding the go ahead run on 2nd base.

Both offenses were quieted until the bottom half of the 9th, when the Jackals delivered the final parting shot. Seth Spivey was the catalyst, hitting a one out double. Dean Green was intentionally walked, and two batters later, Danny Canela put an end to a long night, singling home Spivey, and walking it off for the 2nd time today.

Nate Gercken, who tossed a scoreless ninth frame, earned the win for the Jackals, improving his record to 2-2. Aigles reliver Shaun Ellis suffered the loss, surrendering the game-winning run, and falling to 1-4.

The Jackals return to action on July 19th, as they start a four game series with the 1st place Sussex County Miners. The first two games will be played at Yogi Berra Stadium, while the final two will be played at Skylands Stadium. First pitch is slated for 7:05 pm.
