Amarillo Gorillas News Release
Amarillo, TX 2/17/08 - The Amarillo Gorillas were shut-out by the Texas Brahmas on Sunday night, falling for just the second time in their last nine games by a final score of 3-0. David Cacciola was perfect in net for the Brahmas, turning aside all 37 Amarillo shots in the second and final meeting between Amarillo and Texas this season. In both match-ups, the road team was victorious as the Gorillas beat the Brahmas 7-4 in early December at the Nytex Sports Center.
The first period saw both teams with ample scoring chances, but neither club could find the back of the net. Amarillo goaltender Dan Mcwhinney turned aside all 11 Texas shots in the frame, while Amarillo managed 12 shots on Cacciola. The game would turn in period two, as Kevin Korol got the first goal of the contest at 4:28 of the period, getting help from Scott Sheppard and Blair Manning. The Brahmas would make it a 2-0 lead off of Tyler Skworchinski's goal which was the culmination of a 2 on 1 rush with line-mate Anders Strome.
Despite Amarillo's 17 third period shots, the Brahmas would increase their lead in the final frame as Strome got a goal of his own from Skworchinski at 7:59 to put the Brahmas on top 3-0. Skworchinski hit a streaking Strome at center ice with the Brahmas short-handed, and Strome buried the partial breakaway on McWhinney as the puck just barely crossed the goal line before McWhinney could sweep the puck away with his glove.
Both clubs went scoreless on the power-play, with Amarillo going 0-6 and Texas going 0-4. The Gorillas still hold the fifth playoff spot in the Southern Conference, leading Corpus Christi by two points, and Austin by three.
Amarillo will be back at it this weekend, with home games on Friday the 22nd against Tulsa, and Sunday the 24th against Youngstown sandwiched between a road game at Odessa on Saturday the 23rd. Friday and Saturday are 7:05 starts, while Sunday is a 6:05 face-off.
