Burlington Tops Peoria With Five-Run Ninth

Peoria, IL - For the second straight night, the Peoria Chiefs and Burlington Bees took a 1-1 game into the ninth inning, but Burlington exploded for five unearned runs in the final frame to defeat the Chiefs 6-1 on Friday. Peoria falls to 18-15 on the season and is now 6-2 on the homestand with one game left.

Peoria grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning against Josh Bowman. Pierre LePage led off with a walk, stole second and stole third. Greg Rohan put the Chiefs on top with a RBI groundout to shortstop.

Burlington tied the game against Chiefs' starter Austin Kirk in the top of the sixth. Royce Consigli reached on a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Josh Whitaker tied the game with a double to left before Kirk got out of the inning with the game tied.

The Chiefs got their first hit in the sixth inning as Rubi Silva singled off Bowman but the Chiefs failed to score. Elliot Soto reached on a bunt single in the seventh but again the Chiefs couldn't score and the game went into the ninth inning still tied 1-1.

The Bees' took their first lead of the game and broke the contest wide open in the top half of the ninth with five unearned runs in the frame. Chiefs' reliever Jeffry Antigua came into the game and allowed a leadoff double to Nino Leyja, who moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Pineda. With one out, John Nester hit a grounder to third and Arismendy Alcantara threw home to get Leyja but the Chiefs botched the run down with the Bees taking a 2-1 lead. After Tyreace House popped out, Antigua walked Consigli and Yordy Cabrera to load the bases for Whitaker. With two down, Whitaker cleared the bases with a three-run triple over the head of Chiefs' right fielder Smaily Borges and came in to score on a throwing error by LePage to give the Bees' a 6-1 advantage.

Kirk allowed just one run on four hits in six innings of work. He did not issue a walk and struck out one batter in the no-decision. Bryce Shafer pitched two innings of shutout relief work in which he allowed just one hit and struck out three. Jeffry Antigua (1-2) suffered the loss as he allowed five unearned runs on two hits in 2/3 innings pitched. He also walked two batters in the contest. Alvaro Sosa pitched the final 1/3 inning in which he allowed one hit and walked one batter.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Austin Kirk (LHP) - Kirk allowed just one run on four hits for the no-decision in his seventh start of the season. He also struck out one batter for his second quality start of the season, joining Robinson Lopez and Cam Greathouse as the only Peoria hurlers with multiple quality starts this season.
