Frederick Keys News Release

FREDERICK, MD - The Frederick Keys (21-35, 50-75) and Potomac Nationals (30-28, 60-65) split a quasi-doubleheader on Wednesday night at Nymeo Field. The two teams picked up a suspended game from Tuesday night in the bottom of the first inning and the P-Nats polished off a 6-3 win. The Keys bullpen came out in force in game two as Scott Burke and company tossed a 1-0 shutout victory. With the win, the Keys force a rubber match on Thursday night.

Game two saw limited offense until the Keys broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth. Ben Breazeale lead-off the inning with a single and Will Robertson followed with a double into left-center field to put two runners in scoring position.

The P-Nats then brought in Hayden Howard to relieve Francys Peguero (0-1). He walked a batter to load the bases and Robbie Thorburn followed with a soft groundball to the right side that scored the runner from third.

Burke was outstanding for the Keys. In his first Carolina League start, he tossed four scoreless frames and struck out four batters, including a pair with two runners in scoring position in the second inning.

Reed Hayes (1-2) picked up the win after throwing two innings in relief. Tim Naughton (S, 8) made it interesting in the ninth as he put the tying and go-ahead runners on before retiring the final batter.

The suspended game picked up in the bottom of the first inning with the Keys trailing 2-0 after the P-Nats scored against Blaine Knight (1-10) in the opening half inning that was played on Tuesday.

Potomac continued their scoring ways on Wednesday. After a strikeout-wild-pitch and a walk put runners at first and second, MLB Rehabber Ryan Zimmerman hit a double down the left-field line that scored a run. Aldrem Corredor then brought home another to make it 4-0 P-Nats.

In the third, Jakson Reetz snuck a home run over the wall in left field, and the P-Nats were able to load the bases in the fourth with no one out.

Ofelky Peralta limited the damage. He forced a groundball double-play that allowed a run to score to make it 5-0 and then got a pop-up to get out of the jam.

Peralta lasted into the seventh but was pulled after he recorded a strikeout. He struck out four and allowed four runs while walking a career-high six batters over 5.1 innings.

Meanwhile, P-Nats starter Tim Cate (5-4) was dealing. His only hiccup was in the fifth when Daniel Fajardo clubbed an RBI double off him to put the Keys on the board. Cate picked up the win and struck out nine over seven innings.

The Keys offense got going in the eighth inning. After Fajardo singled, Chris Clare followed with a double to put runners at second and third with one-out. Cole Billingsley then hit a groundball that scored a run and Sean Miller poked a two-out base hit through the right side to bring home a run and make it 6-3 P-Nats

Frankie Bartow (S, 6) shut the door in the ninth for Potomac. Knight took the loss despite throwing just one inning on Tuesday.

The Keys and P-Nats square off in a rubber match on Thursday, August 22 before hitting the road. RHP Brenan Hanifee (8-9, 4.35) takes the mound for Frederick against RHP Francys Peguero (0-0, 1.42) for Potomac. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00pm with pregame coverage starting at 6:45pm on the Tune In app and frederickkeys.com.
