Kane County Cougars News Release
PEORIA, Ill. - Left-hander Kyler Burke carried a perfect game into the sixth inning as the Peoria Chiefs rolled over the Kane County Cougars with a 4-1 victory on Saturday night at O'Brien Field.
Burke (2-2) wiped through the Kane County (33-29) through the first five frames without allowing a baserunner, retiring 15 consecutive hitters before Dean Espy opened the sixth with a single. Lane Adams added an infield hit in the seventh as Burke posted seven scoreless frames while walking nobody and striking out nine.
Peoria (30-32) only used one inning to contribute offensively in Burke's corner. All four of the Chiefs' runs came in the opening frame against Scott Alexander (2-3). Zeke DeVoss walked to start the first and advanced to second on a base hit by Pin-Chieh Chen. Paul Hoilman doubled DeVoss home to put the Chiefs on the board.
A throwing error by Michael Antonio prolonged the first as Chen came home when Antonio tried to retire Javier Baez at first. Two batters later, Sergio Burruel smacked a two-run single to center, bringing home Hoilman and Baez. Alexander left the game right there with an apparent injury and was replaced by Jason Mitchell, who tossed 5.1 shutout innings out of the bullpen. Kane County got their only run in the eighth when Yowill Espinal scored on a Larry Suarez wild pitch. Luis Liria (S, 2) worked a perfect ninth.
The Cougars play the second of a three-game series against the Chiefs on Sunday afternoon from O'Brien Field at 2:00. Right-hander Andrew Ferguson (0-0) is expected to start for the Cougars against fellow righty Starling Peralta (0-2). You can listen to the broadcast on AM 1280 WBIG and www.kccougars.com, beginning with Cougars on Deck at 1:45 p.m. The Cougars return to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Friday, June 15 when they take on the Cedar Rapids Kernels at 6:30 p.m. For tickets, please call (630) 232-8811 or visit www.kccougars.com.
