Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Starter Cam Bedrosian struck out four as he guided the Kernels to a 4-3 victory over the Clinton Lumberkings on Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Cedar Rapids improves to 27-35, while Clinton falls to 22-39, and 6-23 on the road.
Bedrosian pitched his best start of the year, lasting a season-high 6 full innings. A first round pick in 2010, Bedrosian (1-5) earned his first victory at the A level by way of 4 strikeouts while allowing 3 hits and walking 3.
The Kernels laced two home runs to left field for their first three runs of the game.
With 2 outs in the 3rd inning and Kaleb Cowart on first base, Frazier Hall hit a flyball to the opposite field that hit the Transamerica K's for Kid sign past the left field fence. Because the ball bounced off the sign and back into left field, Hall actually stopped at second base before realizing he'd hit his sixth home run of the season to give the Kernels a 2-0 lead.
Kevin Moesquit added another run with a surprise shot in the 5th inning, when he hit a line drive over the left field porch on an inside fastball. It was the Curacao native's second home run of the year, and his first since April 17.
After 2 LumberKings runs in the top of the 7th, Cowart added the final run in the 7th inning with his team-high fourteenth double. Ryan Jones hustled home from first base when Cowart connected to the opposite field, with the ball landing at the base of the wall. Cowart - a Midwest League All-Star - now has an MWL-high 46 RBI.
Clinton catcher Steven Baron hit a solo home run in the 8th which brought the game within 1, but the Kernels pitching staff held on.
Joe Melioris and Stephen Tromblee comined for a 2 inning hold before Ty Kelley saved the game in the 9th inning after he induced three consecutive outs. The Midwest League All-Star closer now has an Angels-organization high 10 saves.
Ambirois Hidalgo (2-8) took the loss for Clinton after pitching 5 innings, in which he allowed 5 hits and 3 earned runs.
